Neil is a Professor of Biomechanics & Technology at Swansea University. Over the last 20 years, he has worked in various capacities on a range of applied research projects with sporting partners such as the UK Sports Institute (previously the English Institute of Sport), British Athletics, the Rugby Football Union, Sport Wales, Swim Wales, numerous professional rugby and football (soccer) clubs, and now PAP.
Neil’s broad research interests focus on understanding the biomechanics of sports techniques using a range of empirical and computer simulation-based approaches. This has often required the development of novel and bespoke performance metrics, and the use of a range of different measurement technologies such as high-speed video, force transducers, 3D motion capture, electromyography, and a range of inertial measurement unit systems.
More recently, his interdisciplinary research collaborations have expanded the applications by incorporating aspects of engineering, motor control, data science and computer science. He has been involved in the development of new technologies, such as heated garments worn by British athletes at the Tokyo Olympics, and in the translation of concepts used widely in other fields, such as immersive wall technology, to performance sport applications.
